TODAY IN HISTORY

2004:National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice is selected by President George W. Bush to succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state. She is the first African American woman to hold the post; he was the first African American to do so.

1966: Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard is acquitted of charges that he murdered his pregnant wife, Marilyn, in 1954. Sheppard served nearly 10 years in prison before his acquittal.

1988: Benazir Bhutto is elected prime minister of Pakistan. Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party wins a majority in the National Assembly, making her the first woman to lead a Muslim nation in modern history.
