1860: Eleven-year-old Grace Bedell of Westfield, N.Y., sends a letter to presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln, suggesting he could improve his appearance by growing a beard.

1966: Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale found the Black Panther Party by drafting the Ten Point Program in Oakland, Calif., outlining their demands on behalf of "Black and oppressed people" and proposing a system of militant protection for African American neighborhoods against police brutality.
