TODAY IN HISTORY

 OCTOBER 13
1792:The cornerstone is laid for a presidential residence, designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, in Washington, D.C. In 1800, John Adams becomes the first president to reside in this executive mansion, which comes to be known as the White House because of its contrast to the predominantly red brick buildings nearby.

1843: Henry Jones and a group of 11 other German immigrants found the Independent Order of B’nai B’rith (Children of the Covenant), the oldest Jewish service organization in the world, in New York City. The organization, now known as B’nai B’rith International, currently has members in more than 50 countries.
