2003:Actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger is elected governor of California in a special recall election to replace Gray Davis, beating 134 other candidates.

1985: Four Palestinian Liberation Front terrorists seize the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in the Mediterranean near Alexandria, Egypt, taking over 400 passengers hostage.  The following day, they kill wheelchair-bound American passenger Leon Klinghoffer.

2001: In response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the United States leads a coalition of nations in the invasion of Afghanistan. “Operation Enduring Freedom” targets Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda organization, as well as the fundamentalist Taliban regime.
