OCTOBER 6
1973:The armies of Syria and Egypt attack Israel during Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.  Although taken by surprise, Israel repels the invasion with the aid of U.S. airlifts.

1981: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, the first Arab leader to recognize Israel, is assassinated along with 11 other dignitaries by Islamic militants led by Khaled Islambouli, at a military parade commemorating the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
