SEPTEMBER 12
1953:Massachusetts senator and future U.S. president John F. Kennedy marries Washington Times-Herald photographer Jacqueline Lee Bouvier at St. Mary's Church in Newport, R.I.

1992:
Mae Jemison becomes the first African American woman in space, serving as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Endeavor. The crew also includes Mamoru Mohri, the first Japanese astronaut to fly on the shuttle, as well as Mark Lee and N. Jan Davis, the first married couple in space.
