1952:Seventeen-year-old Prince Hussein succeeds to the Jordanian throne, replacing his father, King Talal, who was declared unfit to rule by the Jordanian parliament because of mental illness. Hussein reigns until his death in 1999.

1965: Rioting breaks out in the Watts neighborhood of south Los Angeles, sparked by police treatment of a black motorist suspected of drunk driving. The riots continue for six days, resulting in the deaths of 34 people, over 1,000 injuries and more than $35 million in property damage.

1973: Clive Campbell, otherwise known as DJ Kool Herc, the founding father of hip-hop, introduces the world to his innovative break-beat style at his sister’s birthday party in the Bronx.
