TODAY IN HISTORY

1941: President Franklin Roosevelt takes a step closer to war by signing the Lend-Lease Act, which allows the U.S. to send military supplies to countries fighting Germany and Japan.

1942: Gen. Douglas MacArthur escapes the Japanese advancement in the Philippines. He will later vow: “I shall return.”
