1836:“Remember the Alamo.” Almost 200 Texans die at the Alamo fighting Mexican troops. Their deaths become Texas’ battle cry.


1857: Dred Scott is told by the U.S. Supreme Court that he has no right to sue for freedom in a federal court.

1981: Walter Cronkite signs off with his signature line—“That’s the way it is”—for the last time on The CBS Evening News.
