1770:Crispus Attucks and four others are killed during the Boston Massacre, when British soldiers fire into a crowd of snow-throwing Bostonians.

1946: Speaking at Westminster College in Missouri, Winston Churchill warns an “iron curtain has descended” on Europe.

1953: Joseph Stalin, whose policies resulted in the deaths of millions of Soviet citizens, dies after 25 years in power. He was 73.
