1931:More than 100 years after Francis Scott Key penned the lyrics, President Herbert Hoover signs legislation making “The Star-Spangled Banner” America’s national anthem.

1845: John Tyler is the first president to have a veto overturned by Congress. Less than 5 percent of presidential vetoes have since been overridden.

1859: A two-day auction begins to sell 436 slaves formerly owned by Pierce Butler. It is America's largest recorded slave auction.

1887: Anne Sullivan meets her student, 6-year-old Helen Keller, for the first time.

1991: Los Angeles police officers are videotaped beating Rodney King after stopping him for speeding.
