1959: “The day the music died.” Rock pioneer Buddy Holly, along with Ritchie Valens and Jiles “The Big Bopper” Richardson, die when their plane crashes in Iowa.

1994:
Eileen Collins becomes the first woman to pilot a space shuttle when she blasts off in Discovery.
