TODAY IN HISTORY

1967:LBJ nominates Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court. The grandson of a slave, he becomes the first African American on the high court.

1966: “You have the right to remain silent.” In a case involving convicted rapist Ernesto Miranda, the Supreme Court rules police must inform suspects of their constitutional rights before questioning.

1927: Charles Lindbergh is showered with a ticker tape parade in New York.
