TODAY IN HISTORY


1967:In Britain, the Beatles release the album that changes rock—Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It’s released in the U.S. a day later.

1980: The world’s first 24-hour news network is born as CNN hits the tube.

1813: Capt. James Lawrence, commanding the USS Chesapeake, is mortally wounded during battle in the War of 1812. His order, “Don’t give up the ship,” becomes an unofficial Navy motto.
