TODAY IN HISTORY

1911:Driving the race’s only single-seat car, Ray Harroun wins the first Indianapolis 500 in 6 hours, 42 minutes, 8 seconds. His average speed: 74.59 mph. Purse amount: $27,550.

1958: The bodies of two unknown soldiers, killed during World War II and the Korean War, are buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
