Angel Flight West (angelflightwest.org)arranges free private air transportation to people whose medical conditions require them to travel for treatment. Most AFW patients can’t fly commercially because of cost or special medical concerns. Since the organization began in 1983, its network of volunteer pilots in 13 western states have completed over 60,000 missions, flying for more than 16 million miles with some $41 million in flight costs. Of roughly 1,000 yearly passengers, one third are children, half are minorities, and four in five are in or near poverty. AFW also arranges transportation for other humanitarian purposes such as bringing injured veterans to therapy programs, helping victims escape domestic abuse, and reuniting families separated by natural disasters.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
