The Coral Reef Alliance (Coral.org) is the only international organization working to rally coastal communities to protect coral reefs and the diverse ecosystems they foster. Warmer and more acidic oceans have weakened reefs worldwide. Overfishing, pollution, coral mining, and recreational boating also threaten reefs, some of which have lost more than half of their coral cover in the past few decades. CORAL now works in Hawaii, Mexico, Honduras, Fiji, and Indonesia, managing coastal areas so that they’re better protected from human impact, and pushing local businesses to support coral-friendly fishing and tourism. The organization also installs mooring buoys in sensitive areas to prevent anchor damage and erects signs to educate tourists about the fragility of the reefs.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
