Since 1880, the League of American Bicyclists (BikeLeague.org) has advocated for bicyclists nationwide, working to secure safe roads and champion the bicycle as a viable means of transportation. As concerns grow about the environmental toll of cars, Americans have been adopting this healthy, cheap, and eco-friendly alternative at a fast clip in recent years. The League’s Bicycle-Friendly America program annually ranks states on their level of bike-friendliness (currently No. 1: Washington). The League also encourages communities to actively promote cycling by passing and enforcing bike-friendly road-safety regulations, funding bike-safety education programs, and installing bike lanes and parking racks. The League also works with engineers to provide hands-on assistance to communities looking to better accommodate bicyclists.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
