Apparently eager to avoid simply saying it was getting rid of a lot of employees or jobs, it coined a new job-cutting euphemism: "the bank will be demising the roles of 942 relationship managers." Certain financial advisers also "will be demised," HSBC noted.
The more standard sense of the verb "to demise" is legal jargon, meaning to transfer an estate by means of a will or a lease. It can also mean to transfer a title (such as "King") through the death or abdication of the previous holder.
