DECEMBER 21

1620: William Bradford and a landing party of English "Pilgrims" from the Mayflower step onto American soil for the first time, at the site of Plymouth Colony in what is to become Massachusetts.

1937: Walt Disney's first full-length, color animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, premieres at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. The classic film cost $1.5 million to make and is the result of the work of 750 people, including animators and artists. In 1939, Shirley Temple presents Disney with an honorary award at the Oscars for his pioneering cinematic creation.

2012: According to interpretations of the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar, the world is meant to end on this day.

1913:The first crossword puzzle (with 32 clues) printed in New York World

1803:The Middlesex Canal opens to connect the Merrimack River with Boston Harbor.
