CHARITY OF THE WEEK

The Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation (diabetesaction.org) has provided grants to over 240 research studies across the U.S., with goals ranging from curing diabetes with gene therapies and beta-cell transplantation to developing nutritional approaches for preventing the disease. Diabetes Action also provides international medical assistance; in 2010, it delivered $1.5 million worth of medical supplies to Haiti after the devastating earthquake. The charity’s other programs include the annual Diabetes University, a free nutrition education program for the public, as well as a scholarship fund that enables children with diabetes to attend diabetes summer camps, where they can learn how to manage their chronic disease.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
