DECEMBER 23

1783: Gen. George Washington resigns as commander in chief of the Continental Army in the aftermath of the American victory in the Revolutionary War. He returns home to his Mount Vernon plantation in northern Virginia for Christmas, where he intends to live quietly as a civilian; however, only five years later, Washington will be elected to the first of two terms as president of the United States.

1888:van Gogh cuts off lower part of left ear.

1970: Construction workers secure the final steel beams at the top of the 110-story World Trade Center in New York City, as the North Tower reaches a height of 1,368 feet.

1977: Musician Cat Stevens announces that he has become a Muslim; he later changes his name to Yusuf Islam.

1920:Ireland is divided into two parts, each having its own parliament.
