DECEMBER 20

1606: Capt. Christopher Newport and more than 100 colonists set sail from London on a voyage to the "New World," chartered by the Virginia Company of London. The Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery will land in Jamestown, Va., on April 26, 1607, to establish the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.

1920: Bob Hope, born Leslie Townes Hope, becomes a U.S. citizen, at the age of 17. The British-born comedian would become one of the most beloved and well-respected entertainers of the 20th century.

1963: More than 4,000 people take advantage of a brief opening of the Berlin Wall, which allows West Berliners to visit their relatives in communist East Berlin for one day. Some 170,000 one-day passes would be issued to West Berliners over the Christmas holidays.


1699:Peter the Great ordered Russian New Year changed-Sept 1 to Jan 1

1522: Suleiman the Magnificent accepts Knights of Rhodes' surrender, who evacuate & become Knights of Malta.

1803:Louisiana Purchase formally transferred from France to US for $15M.

1921:A judge decides that baseball's World Series should be a best of 7 series.
