1928: Mickey Mouse stars in his first film, Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie, which premieres on this day in New York City. Steamboat Willie is one of the first sound-synchronized animated movies.

1820:Antarctica is discovered by US Navy Captain Nathaniel B Palmer.

1978: Some 900 members of the People's Temple religious cult commit suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Flavor-Aid, under the direction of leader Jim Jones, in Jonestown, Guyana. U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan and four others were fatally shot earlier in the day, while investigating the activities of the People's Temple.

1987: A joint congressional investigating committee declares that President Ronald Reagan bears the "ultimate responsibility" for the wrongdoing of members of his administration in the Iran-Contra scandal.


1883:American and Canadian railroads institute five standard continental time zones.

1626:St. Peter's Basilica is consecrated.

1307:William Tell shoots an apple off his son's head
