 1988:In Pakistan's first free elections in a decade, Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party wins the largest bloc of seats in the National Assembly, clearing the way for Bhutto to become prime minister. She is the first female head of state of a Muslim nation in modern history.

1959:The last Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The Sound of Music" opens on Broadway

1966: After serving nearly 10 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard is acquitted of the 1954 murder of his pregnant wife, Marilyn.

2004: President George W. Bush nominates National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice to become secretary of state, succeeding Colin Powell. Rice is the first African American woman to hold the post; Powell was the first African American to hold the post.
