TODAY IN HISTORY


NOVEMBER 15

 1864:Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman begins leading more than 60,000 Union soldiers on his "March to the Sea." For the next six weeks, Sherman's troops would burn a path of destruction through Georgia, from industrial Atlanta to coastal Savannah.

1956:Elvis Presley's first movie, Love Me Tender, premieres in New York's Paramount Theater.

1969: Dave Thomas opens the first Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers. The fast-food restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, is named after his daughter Melinda Lou (nicknamed Wendy).

1994: Martina Navratilova retires from singles tennis with a loss to Gabriela Sabatini in the first round of the WTA Championships at Madison Square Garden. During her 19-year singles career, "Marvelous" Martina — a Tennis Hall of Famer — won 167 titles and more than 1,430 matches. Yet it is not the end of her career: Navratilova would return to tennis in 2000, this time as a successful doubles player.


1971:Intel releases world's first commercial single-chip microprocessor, the 4004.

1920:First assembly of the League of Nations

1859:First modern Olympic Games in Athens

1791:The first U.S Catholic college, Georgetown University, opens its doors.

1806:American explorer Zebulon Pike spots Pikes Peak.
