1964:Twenty-one-year-old singer Mary Wells is the first recording artist on Berry Gordy's Motown record label to have a No. 1 hit on the Billboard singles chart, with the Smokey Robinson composition "My Guy."

1920: Nearly 500 years after her death, the French military leader Joan of Arc is canonized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Benedict XV.

1985: After his first season with the Chicago Bulls, former UNC Chapel Hill basketball star Michael Jordan is named the NBA's rookie of the year. He had averaged 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

1929:The first Academy Awards show was held as a banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

1866:The U S Congress eliminates the half-dime coin and authorizes the minting of a 5-cent coin, the nickel.
