1844:From the U.S. Capitol, inventor Samuel Morse sends the first message via commercial telegraph line, to his assistant, Alfred Vail, in Baltimore. Morse’s ominous, historic message to Vail is the biblical quote, “What hath God wrought.”

1976: The supersonic Concorde jet begins trans-Atlantic service, with British Airways and Air France linking London and Paris with Washington, D.C.

1986: Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is the first serving British leader to visit Israel since the Jewish state declared independence from the British protectorate 38 years earlier.

1883:Brooklyn Bridge (in NY) opens

1830:"Mary Had A Little Lamb" is published.

1607:The first English colony, Jamestown, is founded.

1964:Hello, Dolly! the Broadway musical wins a total of nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
