TODAY IN HISTORY

1932:Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, landing in Derry, Northern Ireland. Bad weather had forced her to curtail her journey, as the planned destination was France. Congress would award Earhart the Distinguished Flying Cross for her achievement.

1945: Screen legends Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart are married at a friend's farm near Lucas, Ohio. They had met two years earlier while filming To Have and Have Not and would enjoy one of Hollywood's most successful marriages, despite the 24 year age gap between them.

1999: Susan Lucci is awarded her first Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her portrayal of Erica Kane on the ABC soap opera All My Children.


1840:Britain proclaims New Zealand as a colony.
