1992:After nearly 30 years as host, Johnny Carson says farewell to an estimated 50 million viewers on his final episode of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

1856: Mayhem breaks out in Congress when Rep. Preston Brooks of South Carolina viciously beats Sen. Charles Sumner of Massachusetts into unconsciousness with his cane in the Senate chambers. Brooks was angered by Sumner's comments against the Kansas-Nebraska Act and its proslavery supporters, one of whom was Brooks' cousin.

1972: President Richard Nixon is the first U.S. president to visit Moscow, where he arrives for a week-long summit with Soviet leaders on topics ranging from the Vietnam War to the missile race to a joint space exploration project.

1939:Hitler & Mussolini sign the "Pact of Steel"

1973:U.S. President Richard Nixon confesses his role in the Watergate cover-up.

2003:Female golfer Annika Sorenstam accepts offer to play in men's-only PGA tournament
