1978:Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler reach the summit of Mount Everest, marking the first time that the world’s highest peak has been conquered without the aid of supplemental oxygen—a feat that had previously been considered impossible.

1877: The Westminster Kennel Club hosts the First Annual New York Bench Show of Dogs, now known as the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, at Gilmore’s Gardens in New York City.

1945: World War II draws to a close in Europe as “Victory in Europe” or “V-E” Day is celebrated throughout the Allied world, a day after German Col. Alfred Jodl unconditionally surrendered in Reims, France.
