FEBRUARY 22
1959:Lee Petty wins the first ever Daytona 500 NASCAR race in Daytona Beach, Fla., racing at an average speed of 135.521 mph to beat Johnny Beauchamp in a photo finish.

1980: In one of the most memorable upsets in Olympic history, the U.S. hockey team defeats the defending four-time gold-medal winning Soviet team in a 4-3 "miracle on ice" in Lake Placid, N.Y. The college-age American team is coached by Herb Brooks and captained by Mike Eruzione; they would go on to win the gold medal against Finland two days later, 4-2.

1994: Former CIA analyst Aldrich Ames and his wife, Rosario, are charged with spying for the Soviet Union (and later, Russia) by the U.S. Department of Justice. Ames would plead guilty to the charge and is serving a life sentence; the double agent could have faced the death penalty because his espionage led to the death and imprisonment of numerous CIA assets.
