1947:Edwin Land demonstrates the first Polaroid Land instant camera before a meeting of the Optical Society of America in New York. The self-developing film produces a black-and-white image in 60 seconds, using chemicals held between the paper and film. The camera would become an instant hit among amateur photographers.

1866: Lucy Hobbs Taylor is the first woman in the U.S. to receive a doctoral degree in dental surgery, earning it from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery.

1965: Former Nation of Islam leader and minister Malcolm X, 39, is fatally shot while speaking before a crowd of 400 at the Audubon Ballroom in New York. Three men, two of them members of the Nation of Islam, would be convicted of his murder.
