FEBRUARY 16
 1972:Wilt Chamberlain of the Los Angeles Lakers becomes the first professional basketball player to score 30,000 career points, sinking number 30,000 during his 941st NBA game, which the Lakers lose 110-109 to the Phoenix Suns.

1959:
Fidel Castro is sworn in as the prime minister of Cuba, six weeks after leading a revolution to remove President Fulgencio Batista, a U.S.-backed military dictator, from office. Castro will retain power in communist Cuba until February 2008, when he finally cedes control to his younger brother, Raúl.

1997:
At 25, Jeff Gordon becomes the youngest race car driver to win the Daytona 500, NASCAR's premier, season-opening event. Gordon, racing for Hendrick Motorsports in his No. 24 Chevy Monte Carlo, averages 148.295 mph and takes home more than $377,000 in prize money. Gordon will repeat his Daytona 500 victory in 1999 and 2005.
