1941:Duke Ellington and his orchestra record their signature tune, the big band classic "Take the 'A' Train." The jazz standard was composed by Billy Strayhorn; the title refers to the New York subway line between Brooklyn and Harlem.

1898: "Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!" More than 260 American seamen are killed when the USS Maine battleship explodes in Cuba's Havana Harbor. Although the cause of the Maine's destruction will never be proven, popular opinion at the time points to an act of Spanish sabotage; the Spanish-American War will begin just over two months later.

1946: Edith Houghton is hired by the Philadelphia Phillies as Major League Baseball's first female talent scout. She will scout hundreds of prospects and sign 16 players for the Phillies over the next six years.
