TODAY IN HISTORY

FEBRUARY 13
1935:Following a 11/2-month trial for the "crime of the century," Bruno Hauptmann is convicted by a jury in Flemington, N.J., of the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh Jr., the infant son of aviation celebrities Charles and Anne Lindbergh. Hauptmann will be executed on April 3, 1936.

1914:
Popular composer Victor Herbert is among the musical visionaries who found the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers at the Hotel Claridge in New York City. Herbert becomes the first ASCAP president.

1945:
As World War II draws near a close in Europe, Allied forces begin firebombing the historic city of Dresden, Germany. Estimates of fatalities vary from about 35,000 to 135,000.
