Lincoln Memorial cornerstone
FEBRUARY 12
1915:On what would have been former president Abraham Lincoln's 106th birthday, the cornerstone of the Lincoln Memorial is laid in Washington. Inside the cornerstone is a biography of Lincoln, signed by his son, Robert Todd Lincoln.

1878:
Harvard University Baseball Club captain Frederick W. Thayer patents the catcher's mask, making the sport safer for the thousands of players who bravely guard home plate.

1924:
George Gershwin's jazz composition "Rhapsody in Blue" is performed for the first time at the "Experiment in Modern Music" concert at the Aeolian Hall in New York City. Gershwin joins the Palais Royal Orchestra on the piano for the afternoon concert.
