1998:Thirty years to the day after winning the gold medal in women's figure skating at the Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble, France, Peggy Fleming undergoes surgery for breast cancer. Now cancer-free, Fleming is an activist for early detection, as well as a television commentator for figure skating.

1942:
Glenn Miller is the first recording artist to receive a gold disc, for the single "Chattanooga Choo Choo." RCA Victor presents Miller and his orchestra with the gold record to signify the sale of more than a million copies of the song.

1972:
David Bowie debuts his androgynous space-age alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, for a small concert at the Toby Jug pub in London.
