TODAY IN HISTORY

FEBRUARY 9
1997:Scotty Bowman of the Detroit Red Wings is the first coach in the National Hockey League to win 1,000 games, after coaching the Red Wings to a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Now retired, Bowman holds the record for the most wins in NHL history: 1,244.

1942:
The War Time Act goes into effect, pushing all the clocks in the United States ahead by one hour. Prompted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Congress passed the daylight savings measure to conserve fuel during World War II.

1969:
Test pilots Jack Waddell and Brien Wygle take off in the first Boeing 747 airliner, the world's first wide-body aircraft, from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. The "Queen of the Skies" goes into commercial service the following year for Pan American Airlines, and the 747 is still in production today.
