FEBRUARY 6
1952:While on holiday in Kenya, Princess Elizabeth learns that she is now queen of the United Kingdom, when her father, King George VI, dies in his sleep at age 56. As of today, Queen Elizabeth II has ruled for 60 years; she will celebrate her diamond jubilee in June.

1820:
Sponsored by the American Colonization Society and partially funded by the U.S. Congress, 86 free blacks leave New York City aboard the Elizabeth, bound for West Africa. The following year, the American Colonization Society will found a settlement in Liberia as a permanent homeland for freed U.S. slaves. In 1847, the Republic of Liberia will become the first independent democracy in Africa.

1971:
During his second moonwalk of the mission, Apollo 14astronaut Alan Shepard uses a six-iron golf club to practice his swing on the Moon, taking advantage of the one-sixth gravity to hit two golf balls "miles and miles and miles."
