FEBRUARY 5
1936:Opening in cinemas on this day, Charlie Chaplin portrays his Little Tramp character in Modern Times — a film that he also wrote, directed and produced — about the difficulties and confusion of living in the modern industrialized world.

1948:
Dick Button lands the first ever double-axle jump attempted in a competition at the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switerland, becoming the first American athlete to take home a gold medal in men's figure skating. Button will repeat his golden feat four years later.

1972:
Bob Douglas, founder and coach of the successful New York Renaissance black basketball team from 1923 to 1949, is the first African American elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
