1953:Rep. Frances Bolton and her son, Rep. Oliver Bolton, both Republicans from Ohio, become the first and only mother and son to serve simultaneously in Congress

1920: Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sells Babe Ruth's contract to the New York Yankees for $125,000 and more than $300,000 in loans, beginning the Yankees' greatest years of baseball success — they will win 29 American League pennants between 1921 and 1964. The Red Sox, on the other hand, suffered from the "curse of the Bambino" and did not win a World Series until 2004.

1962: Pope John XXIII excommunicates Cuban leader Fidel Castro in accordance with Pope Pius XII's 1949 decree forbidding Catholics from supporting communist governments.
