1851:Isaac Singer of New York City is granted a patent for a revolutionary double-treadle home sewing machine.

1970: Janis Joplin performs in public for the last time, ending her set with the Full Tilt Boogie Band at Harvard Stadium in Boston with a rendition of George Gershwin's "Summertime." Joplin will die of a heroin overdose less than two months later, at age 27.

1981: IBM releases its first personal computer, which comes equipped with 16 kilobytes of memory and goes on sale for $1,565.
