TODAY IN HISTORY

AUGUST 4
2000:Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, celebrates her 100th birthday in Buckingham Palace. The mother of Queen Elizabeth II remains the longest-living royal consort in British history. The Queen Mum will die in March 2002 at the age of 101.

1892: Andrew and Abby Borden are found murdered by hatchet in their home in Fall River, Mass. Andrew's 32-year-old daughter, Lizzie, is charged with the murders, but is eventually acquitted after a highly sensational trial. The most enduring aspect of the grisly event is the following tongue-in-cheek rhyme: "Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41."

1983: New York Yankees outfielder Dave Winfield is arrested for animal cruelty after a game versus the Toronto Blue Jays. Winfield had accidentally hit and killed a seagull with a stray baseball he threw while warming up during the game, which the slugger helped the Yankees win 3-1. The charges will be dropped a day later.
