1804:Vice President Aaron Burr and his bitter personal and political rival, former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, duel with pistols near Weehawken, N.J. Hamilton is mortally wounded and dies a day later. Although Burr is charged with murder, he never faces trial and ultimately completes his term as vice president.

1955: President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a bill, introduced by Rep. Charles Bennett of Florida, requiring the printing of "In God We Trust" on all U.S. paper currency.

1987: United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar announces that the birth of Matej Gaspar on this day in Zagreb, Yugoslavia makes the infant the 5 billionth person on Earth. Current estimates predict that the world population will reach 7 billion within the next year.
