TODAY IN HISTORY

JULY 9 
1947:Florence Blanchfield, superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, becomes the first woman to hold permanent military rank when she is appointed lieutenant colonel by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1955: Bill Haley and His Comets' "Rock Around the Clock" reaches No. 1 on the Billboard pop music charts, where it will stay for eight straight weeks. The upbeat hit is the first rock 'n' roll single to reach the top of the charts.

1995: The Grateful Dead perform in concert for the last time, at Soldier Field in Chicago. Lead guitarist Jerry Garcia will die of a heart attack exactly a month later at age 53.
