1978: King Hussein of Jordan marries American Lisa Halaby, now known as Queen Noor, in Amman, Jordan.

1775: Two months after the start of the American Revolution, the Second Continental Congress unanimously appoints George Washington to serve as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

1963: Kyu Sakamoto scores a No. 1 hit in the United States with the popular Japanese song "Ue O Muite Aruko," inexplicably retitled as "Sukiyaki" for English-speaking listeners.
