TODAY IN HISTORY

APRIL 24
1916:Patrick Pearse, James Connolly and the nationalists of the Irish Republican Brotherhood launch the militant Easter Rising to declare independence for Ireland after centuries of British rule. The rebellion will be crushed by British troop within the week.

1800:
President John Adams approves the allocation of $5,000 to establish the Library of Congress in the Capitol building in Washington "for the purchase of such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress."

1953:
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the leader of Great Britain during World War II, is knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. Churchill had previously refused a knighthood from the queen's late father, King George VI, after his Conservative Party lost the general election of 1945.
