1991:After an eight-mile chase, Rodney King, an African American motorist on parole for robbery, is brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers. The incident is captured on film by bystander George Holliday, causing a national outcry and violent riots. Two of the officers involved will be sentenced to 2½ years in prison for the beating, while King will receive a $3.8 million civil settlement.

1801: David Emanuel is sworn in to complete James Jackson’s term as governor of Georgia, becoming the first Jewish governor of a U.S. state.

1931: President Herbert Hoover signs a bill officially confirming Francis Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the national anthem.
