1884:Workers place a marble capstone on top of the 555-foot Washington Monument in the nation’s capital, completing architect Robert Mills’ design of an obelisk to honor founding father George Washington.

1907: A series of coal mine explosions kills at least 362 men and boys employed by the Fairmont Coal Company in Monongah, W.Va., in the worst mining disaster in U.S. history.

1923: President Calvin Coolidge’s speech before a joint session of Congress becomes the first presidential address to be broadcast on radio stations around the country.
